Banksy filmed live

Here are some extracts from his interview:

“I still paint graffiti because I genuinely think the side of a canal is a more interesting place to have art than a museum. And the fact of the matter is, if you exhibit in a gallery you have to compete against Rembrandt, but if you paint down an alley you only have to compete against a dustbin. I guess it’s the art equivalent of hanging around with fat people to make yourself look thin.”

“I did art at school but I never pursued it any further. I have a large collection of famous art at home, but they’re all fakes. I make them myself. If I like a picture I grab a photo, project it up and paint it. Sometimes I change the colours to fit with the curtains. I do it partly because I’m tight and partly because if the Basquiats and Picassos in the sitting room were real I’d be too scared to ever leave the house.

“I recommend graffiti to anyone, for no other reason than a trip across town is never boring — you’re always on the lookout for new spots and what you can do on them. Likewise, if you ever get bored going round a museum, the interest level ramps up substantially when you smuggle in your own piece under a coat and glue it up somewhere.”

“I don’t make as much money as people think. The commercial galleries that have held exhibitions of my paintings are nothing to do with me. And I certainly don’t see money from the T-shirts, mugs and greeting cards. My lawyer calls me ‘the most infringed artist alive’ and wants me to do something about it. But if you’ve built a reputation on having a casual attitude towards property ownership, it seems a bit bad-mannered to kick off about copyright law.”

90-year-old man arrested for feeding homeless people

(CNN) — Arnold Abbott handed out four plates of food to homeless people in a South Florida park. Then police stopped the 90-year-old from serving up another bite.

“An officer said, ‘Drop that plate right now — like I had a weapon,'” Abbott said.

Abbott and two pastors in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were charged for feeding the homeless in public on Sunday, under a new ordinance banning public food sharing.

Now they face possible jail time and a $500 fine.

“Just because of media attention we don’t stop enforcing the law. We enforce the laws here in Fort Lauderdale,” Mayor Jack Seiler said.

He defended the law in an interview with the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.

“I’m not satisfied with having a cycle of homeless in the city of Fort Lauderdale,” Seiler said. “Providing them with a meal and keeping them in that cycle on the street is not productive.”

“These are the poorest of the poor. They have nothing. They don’t have a roof over their head,” Abbott said. “Who can turn them away?”

It’s a battle Abbott has fought before. In 1999 he sued the city for banning him from feeding homeless people on the beach — and won.

He said the threat of charges won’t stop him from doing it again.

“I’m not afraid of jail. I’m not looking to go, but if I have to, I will,” he said.

On Wednesday, Abbott said he’ll be at Fort Lauderdale Beach, ready to serve another meal.

Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi awarded Nobel Peace Prize

▶ Malala Yousafzai, Kailash Satyarthi Awarded Nobel Peace Prize – YouTube.

Malala Yusafsai is the youngest ever Nobel Peace prize winner, whereas Kailash Satyarthi is in his sixties. She comes from Pakistan, he comes from India: their countries are close neighbors yet have often been at war since the Partition of India in 1947. She is a woman, he is a man, but both fight for the rights of children (all children!) to freedom and education. She is a Muslim, he is a Hindu: the proof that different religions can agree and work together towards a humanitarian goal that is common to both. Their joint prize is a message of hope for the world!

Britain’s Got Talent – autistic boy dances

James Hobley was diagnosed with autism as a child. Growing up, he wore orthopedic boots and splints on the back of his legs to help him walk, due to his inclination to walk on his tiptoes. One day, his mother got a flyer in the mail about a dance activity for kids, and she decided to take James. He immediately fell in love with the freedom he felt while dancing.

After a couple months of dancing, James felt his tendons start to loosen up, and stopped wearing his special footwear. About three years after that, he auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent — and floored the audience!

Watch this stunning 11-year-old perform in front of the judges on Britain’s Got Talent. It’s amazing!

Two-headed snake found in Turkey

A farmer in northeastern Turkey recently discovered a bicephalic snake; that is, it has two heads. This phenomenon occurs when monozygotic twins fail to separate completely, so it’s really a case of conjoined twins and not a mutation that caused two heads to grow.

When these types of animals occur out in the wild, they tend not to live very long. With two brains governing one body, movement isn’t always smooth and deliberate. Instead, they can disagree about how to move, making it fairly difficult to catch prey. This anomalous anatomy also makes them fairly easy prey for larger predators as well. However, two-headed snakes receiving proper captive care are able to live full, relatively normal lives and even give birth to normal offspring.

The two-week-old snake was transferred to a vivarium in southwestern Turkey in order to receive the specialized care it requires for survival. The snake is likely part of the Coluber genus, which are generally referred to as “racers” due to their thin, sleek bodies and ability to move fairly quickly. (…)

These snakes have throats that are more narrow than usual, so the caretakers need to be careful not to offer any food that is too large, since the snake could possibly choke.

Though technically only one of the heads needs to eat, since they share a stomach and nutrients, the two heads don’t know that and can fight over the food. If one head kills the other, it could be disastrous for the head that was initially victorious. If these snakes were in the wild, the time spent fighting would leave it more vulnerable to predators.

Buckingham Palace guardsman under investigation

▶ BBC News : ‘Silly walks’ Buckingham Palace Guardsman under investigation – YouTube.

Guarding the Queen’s home is a serious and solemn duty.

So it’s a good thing Her Majesty was not around to see this soldier apparently pirouetting on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

In his red tunic and bearskin, the Grenadier Guard was filmed seemingly trying to ease the boredom of his two-hour shift with a series of remarkably elegant dance moves.

The guard has been put under investigation.
